Job Announcement: Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children

Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children (FFLIC) is seeking a Parent Advocate/Community Organizer for the Orleans Parish chapter.

FFLIC is a statewide membership based organization dedicated to creating a better life for all of Louisiana’s youth especially those who are involved or at risk of getting involved with the juvenile justice system. We use the strategies of education, peer advocacy and direct action organizing to build strong, powerful families and communities and to fight for justice for our children and ourselves. We specifically seek to transform the juvenile justice system and ensure that resources move from incarceration and punishment to community based programs that help youth and families grow and thrive. Since Katrina, many things have changed. FFLIC seeks a creative, innovative and knowledgeable organizer who can fight for our youth and families in the “new” New Orleans.

The organizers job would include:
  • Coordinating regular outreach and recruitment of new FFLIC members in order to build a strong FFLIC chapter
  • Advocacy with parents and families struggling with a child in the system and those struggling to resettle into the Orleans Parish region
  • Leadership development and education with members to develop peer advocates and community leaders
  • Coordinating a local campaign that empowers members to transform the juvenile justice system and demand quality community based programs and opportunities for youth as New Orleans is rebuilt!
Qualifications:
Must Be:
  • Knowledgeable and resourceful regarding the juvenile justice system in Metropolitan Orleans Parish
  • A go-getter! Someone who takes initiative and leadership to implement a vision
  • Passionate about racial and economic justice and committed to the goal of reducing incarceration and increasing funding for community based programs for youth
  • Outgoing and a strong communicator, written and verbal.
  • A team player, willing to work with a diverse staff and membership
  • Ability to drive and willing to travel.
Preferably:
  • Has first hand knowledge of the Orleans parish juvenile justice system
  • Has experience as an advocate and/or organizer, whether formal or informal
  • Has some fundraising experience
Salary range: $32,000 - $35,000 plus benefits commensurate with experience. Women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply!
